The Gadag schist belt is the northern continuation of the Chitradurga schist belt in the Dharwar Craton (Fig. 1a). This belt consists of both metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. The detailed geology and reserve analysis of gold in the Gadag schist belt were extensively studied by Bruce Foote (1888).

Samples were collected from geologically favorable hosts for gold mineralization from Chitradurga and Gadag schist belts. Bulk samples (1015 kg) were collected and powdered (200250 mesh). Samples were coned, quartered and systematically sampled to give a weight of 20 g.
